Have you tried any indie rain perfumes? They might hit closer to what you want (although they might also veer into 'geosmin nightmare's territory). Fyrrinae's Convergence Zone, Death & Floral's Two Cups of Tea, Andromeda's Curse's Tempestarii, Solstice Scent's Desert Thunderstorm or During the Rain. Indies don't need to be mass-appealing, so it's easier to find that muggy funkiness
I’ve been hearing about Indian mitti attar and was curious if you’ve ever smelled any? I’d love to try it as it’s supposed to capture that perfect earthy petrichor scent: rain on dry clay, mineral, and warm.
If you find a good Mitti Attar you will be in heaven. It is earth incarnate! Like the smell of the inside of a clay pot. I wish I had one to recommend but the one I have has long since “gone out of print” (meaning the company that made it no longer exists).
Black March is really extraordinary. It smells like daffodils in the earth on a rainy day. But for me it’s more of an amazing perfume experience than something I want to wear. Then perfume I love to wear that smells to me like lilacs, earth, and rain is vintage Caron Royal Bain de Champagne. It is one of those overlooked vintage fragrances that is still very inexpensive
Thanks for the recommendation. Lilacs in the world send http://me.in raptures but too many lilac scents are awful. A good.lilac has to smell like the newly softened ground too.
I agree with you about lilacs in the world vs. lilac perfumes. The only one I like is the Caron because it has that beautiful Caron-ade in the base so it’s darker and rich
Reading this I was thinking there must be a CB I hate perfume option that fits what you’re looking for - sure enough that’s exactly where you were going. I used to own to smell a flower and it’s remarkable.
I agree with that terming of some patchouli, sometimes patchouli hits so harsh it smells like a trip into a hoarder house. I want to see some.enterprising soul make you a good rain smell and call it Old Graves. 😁 With love, from a person who could smell old books all day if I weren't terrified of the mold. 😶🌫️
I find that Parfum d'Empire's Vetiver Bourbon seems to have a top note reminiscent of petrichor. But it might be that I'm just confusing the eponymous root with the earthy post-rain smell.
Things I miss: in the 1980s/90s, the Body Shop displayed perfume oil samplers in Bell jar type containers (think: Serge Lutens), on a round tiered table, each with a glass muddler for sniffing. There must have been 30 oils, and the display table was often the shop’s centrepiece. I still have a few little lozenge-shaped frosted glass containers—patchouli (now the texture of melting tar), musk, vetiver and “moss”. I’m sure there was a “rain” at one point.
